Why Your Money Spells May Not Be Working: Two Abundance Blocks You Should Avoid

If you've ever performed a money spell and found yourself wondering, "Why isn't my money spell working?", you aren't alone.

It can be frustrating to put intention, energy, time and money into spiritual work and then feel like nothing is changing. But before assuming you need a stronger spell, a different candle, another ritual, or a completely different approach to manifestation, it may be worth considering something deeper: what you're putting into the world outside of the spell itself.

Spiritual work isn't always about finding the perfect ritual and waiting for money to appear. Sometimes the biggest blocks to abundance are found in our everyday thoughts, behaviors, relationships, and beliefs about money and success.

There are two things I encourage people to pay particular attention to when they're trying to increase abundance.

1. Stop Resenting Other People's Success

One of the first things to examine when you're working toward greater abundance is how you respond when someone else receives the very thing you want. Do you genuinely celebrate them? Or do you find yourself thinking: "Why them and not me?"

Maybe you feel jealous when someone gets a promotion, buys a new home, launches a successful business, travels somewhere you've always wanted to go, or suddenly starts making more money. Those feelings are human. Having a moment of jealousy doesn't make you a bad person. But if resentment toward other people's success becomes a pattern, it's worth paying attention to.

Other people's success is proof of possibility.

If someone else can experience the kind of abundance you're asking for, their success is evidence that the thing you're seeking is possible. Instead of thinking, "Why them?", try asking: "What does their success show me is possible?"

Someone else's financial breakthrough doesn't take your opportunity away. Someone else's thriving business doesn't mean there are fewer successful businesses available. Someone else receiving abundance isn't proof that you've been skipped over.

Their success can actually give you something incredibly valuable: a picture of what is possible. This is one reason I believe learning to celebrate the success of others is important when you're working on your own abundance.

And if you're looking for a spiritual practice to help you become more intentional about recognizing your own thoughts, an oracle deck can be a great tool for reflection. Pulling a card and journaling about what comes up can give you a moment to slow down and examine what you're actually feeling, rather than simply reacting to it.

But there's another layer to this. If you believe that successful people attract jealousy, hatred, spiritual attacks, or the evil eye, then resentment can create an interesting internal conflict. You may consciously want to become more successful while subconsciously associating success with being targeted.

You want the money. You want the opportunities. You want the visibility. You want the beautiful things. But another part of you may be thinking: "I don't want people looking at me differently if I have all of that."

"I don't want people jealous of me."

"I don't want people wishing bad things on me."

"I don't want to become a target."

That conflict is worth examining.

Celebrating other people's success can help you become more comfortable with the idea of success itself. You aren't just saying, "I'm happy for you." You're also reinforcing the belief that abundance can exist in your reality without someone else's abundance needing to disappear.

And when your turn comes, wouldn't you want other people to celebrate you, too?

2. Stop Expecting to Receive What You're Unwilling to Give

The second abundance block is one I think gets overlooked constantly: You have to be willing to give if you want to receive generously.

This doesn't mean you should give away money you don't have, neglect your own needs, or allow people to take advantage of you. Generosity isn't the same as having no boundaries. It's about the energy and behavior of circulation. (By the way, never spend money. Always circulate it.)

Think about it this way. When you give your time, you may receive someone's time when you need it. When you share your knowledge, you may find that knowledge and opportunities come back to you. When you give your energy, you may receive support, encouragement, or opportunities through people.

And when you invest your money into yourself, your business, or other people, you are participating in the circulation of money rather than treating it as something that must be held onto at all costs. You can't take your next breath without giving up the one you have first. ;)

This is also where spiritual teachings about prosperity and abundance can be interesting to explore. If you'd like to dive deeper into the relationship between your beliefs, thoughts, and the way you approach prosperity (plus maybe heal a bit of church trauma), Rev. Ike's Secrets for Health, Joy and Prosperity - For You! is a resource worth exploring.

Look at how you show up in your own spiritual community. Imagine someone has a spiritual business selling oil, candles, herbs, readings, or other spiritual products. They want people to support their business. They want customers to purchase from them. They want people to recommend them.

But they never support another spiritual business. They never purchase from another practitioner. They never recommend anyone or share anyone else's work. They expect everyone to pour into them while they pour into no one else. I'd encourage that person to step back and examine their behaviors with honesty and grace.

How are you participating in the same flow you're asking to receive?

This doesn't mean you have to spend money every time you see someone selling something. And it certainly doesn't mean buying something you don't want or can't afford.

But if you have the ability to support someone, support them. Buy from a small business. Tip someone who provided you with a valuable service. Share someone's work. Recommend a person you genuinely believe in. Donate your time when you can. Teach someone something you know. Invest in yourself. Give from a place of genuine generosity rather than fear.

Because abundance isn't only about how much you can accumulate. It's also about how freely you allow value to move through you. If someone else's success makes you uncomfortable, explore that. If spending money on yourself makes you feel guilty, explore that. You may discover that your relationship with abundance is much bigger than any single money spell or manifestation technique.

And if you're unsure what kind of spiritual work would be appropriate for your particular situation, a spell consultation can you give you an opportunity to discuss your circumstances and spiritual goals before deciding whether spellwork is right for you.
