Road Opener vs. Block Buster: What's the Difference?

Road opener work and block buster work both address obstacles, but they serve different purposes. The difference comes down to whether a road already exists.

What Is a Road Opener?

A road opener is a type of cleansing intended to remove obstacles and blockages from a path that already exists. For example, maybe you already have a job, a promotion becomes available, but something keeps getting in the way of your moving forward. Road opener work is intended to clear obstacles so you can pursue the opportunity.

Think of it like a construction crew removing detour signs, barricades, and roadblocks. The road is already there. You just need the obstructions removed.

What Is a Block Buster?

Block buster work is also a type of cleansing, but its purpose is to break through barriers when there seems to be no clear path forward.

Imagine a mountain standing directly in the way of where you need to go. Instead of removing a few roadblocks, you blow a hole through the mountainside to create a road where one didn't exist before.

That's the difference: a road opener clears the way, while a block buster breaks through the barrier.

Which One Do You Need?

Consider the situation you're dealing with. Is there already a path toward your goal, but something is obstructing it? Or are you facing a barrier that seems to leave you with no way forward? That distinction can help you understand which type of work better fits your circumstances.

One important note about terminology: These practices are rooted in hoodoo, an African American folk spiritual tradition. Although people commonly use the word spells to describe this kind of work (I myself am guilty of this), hoodoo has its own terminology, including, but not limited to work, fixing, and crossing. Calling these practices spells isn't necessarily the language used within the tradition itself.
